There are so many musical instruments to choose from. I've always wanted to learn the violin but just didn't know where to start. Where can you learn a musical instrument in Sydney? Do you learn privately one-to-one or in a larger class?

There is a place along Victoria Road in Rozelle (near Evans Street) where you can learn to play the piano. They also hire out pianos. The name will come to me.
You could try the Forte Music School. There are a few of them around. Great for little kids.
Yamaha Music Centre in Janalli is where I learned how to play. I attended for 6 years and it's great for kids and adults.
Max Music. They have branches in Castle hill & Rouse hill.
I work at the International School of Music (ISM) at the Top Ryde branch and I can honestly say that I love my job. I love my job because I can see how much the children learn in their classes, how their aural skills develop, how their solfege singing improves and how they practise their music with confidence. Even the ones who begin shy and uncertain eventually develop greater confidence in their skills.

For older students, we provide individual lessons as well. I find my experience at ISM so different to the classical training I received. The main difference is that ISM aims to be fun. We move around the room, we sing, we listen, we read, we play, and the children tend to look forward to their weekly music lessons.
I forgot to mention, the instrument we learn is the piano. I may be biased in saying this, but if you are a beginner in music, I believe that piano is one of the best instruments you can begin on. Though it will be challenging initially, learning the piano will enable you to develop a more thorough understanding of the relationship between harmony and melody. This is slightly more difficult to achieve with an instrument that produces only one layer of sound, such as the flute, saxophone, clarinet and so forth. However, if you move from the piano to one of these other instruments, you will find it easier to understand how music works and can then focus all of your energy on the technical skills required to play this other instrument. Along with teaching how to play the piano, ISM aims to develop singing, listening and rhythmical clapping abilities.
