If you like your music with soul, if you like rocking it old-skool, and/or if you miss the feeling of holding music in your hands, then you'll probably like a good vinyl record store. Records are becoming more popular these days amongst DJs and music lovers alike. Where are some rockiní record stores in Sydney?
I definitely agree. Red Eye Records on York St is good, especially if you are after some older records. The last time I went in there the gentleman that served me was really helpful and knowledgeable so I would definitely recommend them. Also if you can't get the the store, you can order online.
Red Eye Records on York Street has a pretty good range. And The Record Store in Surry Hills just off Crown Street has some good stuff for DJs. I know there are some JB Hi Fi stores that are doing new vinyl as well which is cool.
"The Record Store" in the basement of 255 Crown St Darlinghurst has some rocking used records. Go here is you are especially interested in Jazz/Funk/Soul genres. Their tag line is "Because you can't hug an MP3" which just makes me laugh.
Brilliant answers guys, and thank you so much for your wonderful contributions. Red Eye Records is good, and I keep thinking King St Newtown too. Keep the enthusiasm going for other questions that need answers too! Thanks.
I'm surprised that nobody answered Lawson's Records at 380 Pitt St. It has been a while since I have been there but this place deals in second hand vinyl, along with DVDs, CDs and, if I remember correctly, also VHS and audio tapes. It's the sort of place you might even expect to even find those old audio cartridges and perhaps even stumble across some of the musos that played on some of those vinyl albums.
I'm a fan of Red Eye but there is an even more offbeat place on Pitt St called Lawsons. I haven't been there for a while but I remember they had a bewildering array of vinyl across all genres, along with DVDs, CDs and I think they even had audio tapes and VHS cassettes. It has that no nonsense but cool ambience that makes it more for your serious record hunter.
My all-time favourite record store is Beatdisc in Parramatta. The staff are so knowledgeable and friendly, and there's a little community that's built up around them. They also hold instore gigs and parties for their customers with ping-pong, carpark soccer, spit roasts and bbq... it's good to be a part of the Beatdisc community.
Otherwise, closer to home there's Blackwire on Parramatta Rd Annandale - I've never bought a record there but they hold awesome gigs every week. My favourite in Newtown is Repressed Records, who've recently moved into a sweet new space with racks for lots and LOTS of band t-shirts and zines. :)
I like to dig around the op shops or antique stores to see what records they have. I found a Bay City Rollers one that had been signed by the entire band at the Sydney Antique Centre, and a Blondie single that was the perfect birthday gift for my sister at Leura Antiques in the Blue Mountains.
