It's the great Australian lunch time staple, but Vegemite and cheese just doesn't quite cut it for a busy professional. Where can you get the best gourmet sandwich in Sydney's CBD?

Big Bite on Pitt St has some delicious daily specials, and the queues around the corner on a Thursday are for this Lamb delicacy pictured. They do great daily specials, using Vienna bread or wraps, and ingredients are fresh, combinations tantalise the taste buds. Think poached ginger chicken, basil oil, lemon and chive mayonnaise and various sauces and condiments besides that. They are great value for the size (just $10) and filling. If you work near Martin Place, Little Vienna does similar style sandwiches for a similar price.
Decisions, really tricky. Festival Cafe at Darling Harbour do a great job, and as pictured - so do Caffe Jet at the QVB. Can't go wrong at Food on Five in Westfield Sydney either.

For Turkish Bread Sandwiches I would go to Starbucks in Wynyard. They are pricey but definitely worth it.
Reuben Hills on Albion st in Surry Hills has an incredible sandwich - the Not Reuben sandwich. It's a little out of the way from the CBD (depending on where you work, of course) but absolutely worth it - plus the coffee is insanely good!
Without a doubt, the best sandwich you can eat every day for a handful of change is at North's Sandwiches in the CBD. It's hidden in a downstairs arcade near Wynyard, but you can find it from the long line of business people streaming out of the little stairwell on Bridge St. The sandwiches are MASSIVE vienna or sourdough creations, the staff are super efficient and always smiling despite their teeny tiny kitchen, and the chicken schnitzel sambo is a hot-ticket item that you always have to get in early for! But I never mind waiting 5 minutes for them to cook another batch of snitties. :)

It never fails to get an appreciative nod by your workmates in the elevator when you come back from lunch with a huge foil-wrapped packet in hand. They know where you've been.

Oh, lordy. Now I need a sandwich.
