When you are planning to travel overseas, it is always hard to find a bank or business that will give you a decent exchange rate without charging fees. Where in Sydney have you been to exchange money for holidays overseas?
Great question Elle. I have found Travelex? (in the QVB, right near Lush), and the American Express Foreign currency desk at Sydney International airport most helpful. Great commission rates and customer service, especially for the latter place.
Hey Elle, I'm actually about to travel soon myself, so I've been asking around about this as well. And I have discovered several things. Firstly, though you can exchange your money at the airport, from what I have heard, this is not a good idea because the rates and fees aren't too good. Travelex is a good idea though and can be found in various shopping centres around Sydney. I visited the branch in Top Ryde recently and found them very helpful. You can also visit your bank to ask about exchanging money and possibly even getting a travel card. However, they usually charge a fee for adding different currencies to your cards. I went to the Commonwealth bank recently and they informed me that there is an $8 fee whenever you deposit different currencies onto a card. Also note that some currencies are considered 'exotic' and you won't be likely to be able to exchange your funds easily. I've been told that for these 'exotic' currencies, you can either ask Travelex to order them in for you, or you can exchange when you arrive in the country. Hope that's helpful!
