Sometimes we need to unwind and escape the city for a day or two. Where are the best day trip locations in Sydney?

Catching the Manly Ferry and spending the whole day there.
Also like spending a day in the Blue Mountains.
For me anywhere near the beach - Clontarf or Chowder Bay are stunning, as is Shelley Beach in Manly. For an escape out of Sydney, I enjoy going up to The Entrance.
I agree, the Blue Mountains is a great place for a day trip, some hiking and fresh air.
Park the car in Mosman and do the 10km coatal walk to Manly. Pack a lunch and stop along one of the beaches along the way.
Make a trip down to Cronulla. It's just a 45 mins drive from the city. Great beaches. North and South cronulla are great for cafés, restaurants and families. Eloura beach is quite quiet. It's a 3 mins walk from the cronulla train station. There's cronulla mall, which is open with beachy shops and cafés opposite the main beach.
Oh there are so many! Cockatoo Island, Balmain or Homebush Bay via ferry are all awesome. Plan to be at the Island Bar on Cockatoo Island around sunset for a memorable end. If you like the beach, Shellharbour, Wollongong and the breathtaking scenic drives around there are great - you can spend some time at Wattamala and jump the falls if you're brave, then get lunch on the cliff tops at the old grand pubs along the top. Alternatively there's always Leura/Blue Mountains, this area has the BEST produce you'll find in NSW, cute local crafted items, mountain air and oozes charm during a Sunday day trip or as part of a weekend away. There's the Hunter Valley too if you set out early enough.

One of the best ways is to spend the whole day in the city. Normally we would get off at Hyde Park and walk up to the Art Gallery (sometimes also going to the Sydney Museum or galleries at the library) and spend an hour or two checking out the new exhibitions. They change very regularly and if you have a friend visiting Sydney you take them to see the permanent collection.

Then walk through the Domain and Botanical Gardens, sit in Mrs Macquarie's chair down to the opera house. I don't like the cafe in the gardens but there are some nice places to eat by the Opera House.

Then check out the buskers at Circular Quay and then head to the rocks. Now the rocks are not as good as they used to be, but there is the Modern Art Museum that is often worth visiting, the weekend markets usually are fun to walk through and there is often music on the weekends as well.

By this time it is getting on the late afternoon. If there are any events on at Darling Harbour I would head there or head up in the direction of the the QVB. I like also visiting China Town, and if we start in the opposite direction we might start with Yum Cha in China Town.

Then find a nice bar or pub for a drink and that is a whole day right in the centre of the city.

There are so many lovely places near Sydney, it's hard to know! One place that I don't think has been mentioned already is the Royal National Park. We did a family picnic there recently, and I was stunned by its beauty and tranquillity. It was hard to believe the CBD was less than an hour away. The little seaside towns just to its south are also lovely and there were many nice walks and picnic spots in that area too.
